Over the years the Samaritan Center has worked to build many pathways to stewardship. From repurposing gently used household items, to financial donations, to a donation of time, the Center has created many pathways for donors to give back to the community. Recently, we had a special moment with a young donor named Felicity who is 3 years old.

In an effort to teach the principle of giving, Felicity’s mom, Katie encouraged her daughter to donate some of her toys. To prepare, Katie and her daughters watched a TV show about giving to people in need. Once Katie had discussed the TV show with Felicity, they agreed to pick out toys to share with others. Felicity had an abundance of toys and quickly picked out some to give away.

“She was actually very excited to give them to someone!” Katie said. “I thought I was going to have to coax her to part with a toy or two, but she happily filled two large bags on her own!  At one point she picked up a toy to put it in the bag, hesitating for a moment to pull the string on the back that makes sound. I assumed she was remembering how much fun the toy was and would want to keep it, but she said, “This one makes a noise!  They’ll like that.” And put it in the bag.” Katie said.

Representatives from The Samaritan Center received the very special donation and explained the toys would be loved by their new owners. Together the mother and daughter placed the items under the Christmas tree before a quick ‘donor photo’ was taken to hallmark the moment.

“We really appreciate your team stepping in to let her know the toys were appreciated and would make kids very happy this Christmas!” Katie said.

The toys that Felicity donated will be processed and sold in the Center’s toy shop. Funds they generate will help our social services department provide rent assistance, emergency food bags, utility assistance, and even new toys for children in need. While the Samaritan Center works to provide help and hope to those in the community who need assistance, we also strive to build pathways of stewardship to all members of our community.
